Description

The ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA) isĀ  really important place for learning about fish farming in India. It's a part of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in New Delhi. Our journey began as a part of the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) in Barrackpore, West Bengal, before moving to Cuttack, Odisha, in 1949. Finally, we became our own institute in 1987.

Our Mission:
Our goal is to do top-notch research to improve freshwater fish farming. We're focused on helping fish farmers produce more, improving fish quality, using water more efficiently, and increasing farmers' incomes.

Our Vision:
We aim to make Indian fish farming really successful internationally. We want our methods to be good for the environment, profitable for farmers, and provide food for everyone.

Our Mandate:
We're committed to doing both basic and important research to enhance fish farming. We experiment with different ways to raise fish and other water animals. We also educate and share information with people.

Our Facilities:
Our institute has a large campus with many ponds for experiments. We have labs and facilities for studying fish diseases, hatching fish eggs, and making fish food. Our library is filled with books and journals, and we even have a center to demonstrate farming techniques.

Our Technology:
We've developed techniques to breed and raise various types of fish, such as carp and catfish. We've also created special food and medicines to keep them healthy.

Our Products:
We've identified what fish need to eat at different stages of their lives and developed appropriate food. We've also created tests to diagnose fish diseases and medicines to treat them. Some of our discoveries have been turned into products that farmers can use, and we've earned patents and trademarks for our work.

In summary, ICAR-CIFA is a major hub for studying fish farming and supporting farmers in earning more.
