Description
The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute started in 1947 under the Indian government's Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. In 1967, it became part of the ICAR group. Over 75 years, it's become a top institute worldwide for studying fish in tropical seas.
Since it began, the CMFRI has grown a lot, getting bigger and better facilities and hiring skilled staff. In its early years, it focused on things like measuring how much fish was caught, classifying marine creatures, and studying the economics of different fish stocks. This research was vital for India's marine fishing industry, which changed from small-scale fishing for food to a bigger, more diverse industry.
The Institute is known for its wide-ranging research on both catching fish in the sea and farming them. This has earned it a reputation as one of the best institutes globally, similar to other top marine research centers.
